Germany's former world champion Martin Schmitt on Friday announced his immediate retirement, two days after his 36th birthday and after 17 years on the World Cup ski jumping circuit.
"This is a difficult decision. I have had some great moments," said the twice World Cup winner who will not be competing at the Sochi Winter Olympics.
"I made the decision to finish my career after the Four Hills tournament (earlier this month), I have been living for this sport for a long time."
Having won a team large hill gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics and world titles in 1999 and 2001, Schmitt now plans to finish his studies as a coach and hopes for a job with the German Ski Federation (DSV).
