THE OBSERVERS

A show produced with photos, videos and personal accounts from our Observers around the world - all checked by our staff here in Paris. Saturday at 10.15 am Paris time.

Latest update : 2014-03-25

A 'robot medic' for Syria and migrants paid to go to football games in Qatar

A news show produced exclusively from content provided by amateurs. Photos, videos and personal accounts from our network of Observers around the world - all checked by our staff in Paris. First run Saturdays at 9.45 am Paris time.

Story 1: Qatar

We begin today in Qatar. The emirate might be getting ready to host the football World Cup in 2022, but it's got a rocky track record when it comes to filling stadiums. Turnout was disappointing for the Asian Cup three years ago, so the Qataris are anxious to show the world they can fill the stands. Our Observer says he has been paid to show up at matches.

An official at one club in Qatar told us they do provide buses and even lunch for loyal fans, but denied making cash payments. However, we stand by Abu's account, though we don't know just who is making the payments.

Story 2: Turkey

Now to Turkey, which has taken in hundreds of thousands of refugees from the war in neighboring Syria. Among them are two young engineers, who are pouring their money and their heart into a project they hope can save lives. They call it Tena.
