Philippe Sauty, who was supposed to begin a term as mayor of the small southwestern French town of Vibrac on Sunday, was discovered dead early Sunday morning.
The 51-year-old reportedly committed suicide with a hunting rifle. Sauty’s body was found by his wife.
A retiree and former employee of the SNCF, France’s state-owned railway company, Sauty won 75.14 percent of the votes in the first round of Vibrac’s municipal elections last Sunday. The town is home to roughly 157 inhabitants.
An investigation has been opened into Sauty’s death. According to reports, the pressure of his impending mayoral duties had upset him in the days preceding his suicide.
