The US Geological Survey says a powerful 7.6-magnitude aftershock has rocked Chile’s northern coast, a day after a magnitude-8.2 earthquake in the area killed six people.

It caused buildings to shake in the port of Iquique, which saw some damage from the big quake on Tuesday. There are no immediate reports of new damage or injuries.

The latest tremor came 45 minutes after a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock shook the same area.

The stronger aftershock’s epicentre was 14 miles (23 kilometres) south of Iquique. The USGS said the aftershock had a depth of 12 miles (20 kilometres).

Chile’s emergency office ordered a preventive evacuation of the coastline in the country’s north in response to the aftershock.

President Michelle Bachelet, who was visiting the area assessing damages, was evacuated from her hotel in the northern city of Arica.

The Andean nation’s navy declared a tsunami alert after the quake, which was initially reported as being of magnitude 7.4.

Peru also issued a tsunami alert along its southern coast following the aftershock, the Peruvian Navy said via Twitter on Wednesday.

There were no initial reports of damages in Peru.

Tuesday’s quake killed six people in Chile and triggered a tsunami with 2-metre (7-foot) waves.
