Guinea's gold rush

Julien Pain meets Observers to discuss the memorable events they have witnessed.

In this edition of Observers’ Direct, we head to Guinea, with our Observer Fodé Kouyaté. The country has rich deposits of gold, and there’s been a gold rush in the eastern region of Siguiri. Tens of thousands of Guineans are digging the ground in the hope of striking it rich. The problem, Fodé says, is that the mining devastates the environment and brings little money to the region. Our journalists went to meet Fodé in the Wild Wild East of Guinea...
