Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have gathered in Rome for Sunday’s historic canonisation of popes John Paul II and John XXIII. Many spent the evening before the ceremony gathered in the churches of the Eternal City for an all-night vigil.

With the streets outside still teeming with tourists and the faithful, worshippers packed out more than a dozen of Rome’s churches for an evening of prayer and quiet contemplation. Sunday’s ceremony will for the first time ever see two living popes, Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, celebrate the sainthood of two of their predecessors.
