Gridlock or compromise? Obama isolated by midterm election results

And so begins the final chapter in Barack Obama's presidency. Republicans have dominated the midterm elections, taking the Senate and forcing the White House's hand on key issues like immigration reform, Iran and Iraq. The Wednesday after the midterms can also be seen as the first day of the 2016 presidential race. In light of last night's results, what kind of candidate can now claim pole position?
