Italy beat England, 2-1, to start World Cup strongly

Italy defeated England as two former World Cup winners met under intense pressure in the heat and humidity of Amazonia on Saturday in a Group D match.

Mario Balotelli and Claudio Marchisio scored for Italy, while Daniel Sturridge struck for England, as Italy won an entertaining encounter in the heat of Manaus.

The heavyweight encounter had been billed the "rumble in the jungle." The temperature in Manaus was predicted to be 30 centigrade when the match started, with 88 per cent humidity.

When the two teams met in Euro 2012, Italy dominated but only won on penalties after extra time.
