For the fourth time in the tournament’s history, France and Germany will battle for a place in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup when they meet at Maracana in Rio de Janeiro on July 4.

Though it is their first competitive encounter in 28 years, there is plenty of history between the two sides and Friday’s match will likely reopen old wounds for France, whose memories of losses to Germany in 1982 and 1986 are still fresh.
