An Air Algérie flight from Burkina Faso to Algeria with 116 people on board vanished from radar over northern Mali early Thursday. Paris says 51 French nationals were among the passengers.

  • Flight AH 5017 went missing early Thursday about 50 minutes after taking off from Ouagadougou, capital of the West African nation of Burkina Faso, en route to Algiers
  • There were 51 French nationals on board the missing plane, according to the French government
  • The flight disappeared from radar over the northern Malian city of Gao at 1:55 a.m. GMT.. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the plane “probably crashed” in Mali's desert north
  • Gao is the stronghold of the Tuareg separatist group, the MNLA. France has dispatched three military reconnaissance planes from Niger
  • According to Burkina Faso’s transport minister, the pilot requested a change of course at 1:38 a.m. because of a storm
  • Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta said that wreckage from the flight had been found between Aguelhoc and Kidal in the north of the country
  • However, a Burkinabe army general said that wreckage had been found near the town of Gossi in south Mali, 50km from the border with Burkina Faso. Neither report has been confirmed
  • French President François Hollande has vowed to use "all military means" in Mali to find the plane
