Tiger Woods withdrew from the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday, immediately putting his place at next week's PGA Championship, the season's closing major, in doubt.
"After grimacing in pain after his tee shot on No. 9, Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the @WGC_Bridgestone," tweeted the PGA Tour.
The 38-year-old Woods, a winner of 14 majors, underwent back surgery in March.
On Sunday, he was seen holding his back as he withdrew from the event, being driven off the course in a golf buggy, forced to sit ramrod straight to help alleviate the pain.
The PGA Championship gets under way at Valhalla in Kentucky on Thursday.
