The French Far-Right's Inroads: Why is the National Front Gaining Ground?

Europe will be watching the results of this weekend's French local elections carefully. The anti-immigrant leader of the French National Front, Marine Le Pen, is riding high after a record performance in the 2012 presidential election, toning down the provocative rhetoric of her father, and even insisting that her party is no longer "far-right". Have her ideas really gone mainstream, or are the mainstream parties losing their appeal?
