Turkey's army engaged in its first gunfight with the Islamic State (IS) group Thursday after a Turkish soldier was killed by gunfire from across the border in Syria earlier in the afternoon. Hürriyet Daily News recorded the action as it unfolded.

The cross-border attack started at 1:30pm, according to private broadcaster CNNTürk, with gunfire entering Turkey from Syrian territory controlled by the IS group. Turkish armed forces returned fire.

Shortly before 5pm, a non-commissioned Turkish military officer was killed by a gunshot fired across the border from Syria, reported Anadolu Agency. Two other soldiers were also wounded.

Half an hour later, Turkish artillery started to bombard IS group positions in northern Syria.
