Some 8,000 runners competed in the first Dakar Marathon on Sunday, and FRANCE 24 was there to witness the excitement of participants in the first such event to be held in Senegal.

"I'm very happy this is happening where I'm from, Senegal,” said one local runner. “We're going to run! And we're going to get good times.”

In the end, it was a battle between two Kenyans for first place with Bello Yator becoming the first winner of the official Dakar Marathon, crossing the finishing line in two hours and 16 minutes.
