Long touted as the “nice guy” in the Republican presidential primary race, US Senator Marco Rubio has mounted an aggressive assault on rival Donald Trump ahead of potentially decisive ballots across the country on Tuesday.
Rubio on Sunday taunted and baited Trump at a rally in the state of Virginia, repeating claims the billionaire real-estate mogul was a “con artist” who is threatening the future of the Republican Party.
The attack marks a radical departure for Rubio, who initially avoided confronting or responding directly to insults and mockery that have been a trademark of Trump’s campaign.
The verbal jousting began during last week’s Republican debate on US news network CNN, when Rubio took jabs at Trump’s hair and “spray tan”.
Rubio is seen as the preferred candidate of so-called establishment Republicans, but so far the young senator has failed to win a single primary ballot. Claiming at least a few victories on Tuesday could prove to be decisive for the future of his presidential campaign.
