Cuban revolutionary icon Fidel Castro died late Friday in Havana aged 90, his brother, President Raul Castro, announced on national television. Follow the reactions to Castro’s death in FRANCE 24’s live blog.

Castro took power in a 1959 revolution and ruled Cuba for 49 years with a mix of charisma and iron will, becoming a central figure in the Cold War.
• Castro had been in poor health since an intestinal ailment nearly killed him in 2006, and he formally ceded power to his younger brother two years later.
• His passing was greeted with shock in Havana, but with celebrations among the expat community in Miami.
• Castro’s remains will be cremated, and laid to rest on 4 December. A period of official mourning has been declared until that day.
