• Castro took power in a 1959 revolution and ruled Cuba for 49 years with a mix of charisma and iron will, becoming a central figure in the Cold War.
• Castro had been in poor health since an intestinal ailment nearly killed him in 2006, and he formally ceded power to his younger brother two years later.
• His passing was greeted with shock in Havana, but with celebrations among the expat community in Miami.
• Castro’s remains will be cremated, and laid to rest on 4 December. A period of official mourning has been declared until that day.
