To mark International Women’s Day this year, FRANCE 24 met with organisations fighting for women’s rights in Tunisia, where nearly half of women have been the victim of gender-based violence.

Violence against women is widespread in Tunisia, where 47.6 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 64 have experienced some form of violence in their lifetime, according to a 2010 report.

In an effort to tackle the problem, Tunisia’s parliament is currently debating a bill that would strengthen laws against gender-based violence.

But in the absence of any meaningful legislation, it has largely fallen to women’s rights groups to provide victims with support, whether it be a safe place to stay or legal aid.
