Real Madrid to face MLS All-Stars in August

LOS ANGELES (AFP) -

Real Madrid will take on Major League Soccer's All-Star lineup at Soldier Field in Chicago on August 2, MLS announced on Saturday.

The game will mark the first time that the MLS All-Stars will play a team from La Liga.

In previous versions of the exhibition All-Star Game, the side culled from MLS clubs have taken on clubs from the English Premier League, the Bundesliga, Serie A, Mexico and the Scottish Premier League.

MLS lost the 2016 All-Star game, falling 2-1 to Arsenal in San Jose, California.

MLS had won the two previous All-Star Games, beating Bayern Munich in 2014 before downing Tottenham in 2015.

This year the MLS side will be coached by Veljko Paunovic of the Chicago Fire, who spent more than a decade playing in Spain and made 87 appearances for Real Madrid's crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid.

"I know how special it is to compete against Real Madrid and I think our players and fans will also enjoy the experience," Paunovic said in a statement released by MLS.
