All Black Whitelock banned for two weeks

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) -

All Blacks lock Sam Whitelock was given a two-week Super Rugby ban Monday after striking an opponent with his elbow while playing for Canterbury Crusaders in South Africa.

The incident involving the New Zealand forward occurred in the closing stage of a 48-21 victory over Central Cheetahs in Bloemfontein last Saturday.

His length of his suspension was decided by a judicial committee from competition organisers SANZAAR.

Whitelock will miss matches against the Northern Bulls in Pretoria this Saturday and against the Wellington Hurricanes in Christchurch on May 13.

All Blacks skipper and No. 8 Kieran Read broke his thumb against the Cheetahs and is likely to be out of action for at least six weeks.
