Hooliganism, a magnifying mirror of Israel's inner divisions

Violence in Israeli football throws up questions about Israeli society as a whole. Does football act as a social equaliser or as a catalyst for widespread frustration and divisions? If football mirrors society, then Israel can be violent and very divided. Incidents, some of them racially motivated, marred last season's national football championship.

Syria's torture victims speak out

Victims of torture at the hands of the Syrian regime's security apparatus have been flooding into neighbouring Jordan. Some agreed to speak out, albeit anonymously for fear of reprisals against their families back in Syria. Many activists have suffered physical and psychological abuse at the hands of their jailers. Gallagher Fenwick went to speak to some of the victims at a treatment centre in Jordan.

Gaza: five years with Hamas at the helm

It's now five years since Islamist party Hamas took power in the Gaza Strip. Hamas claims that the lives of Palestinians has improved in that time, but locals who do not belong to the party would not agree, while ordinary Gazans are also complaining about how there are now more restrictions on their freedom of speech.

Orthodox Jews and Arabs no longer exempt from Israeli conscription

Israel's Supreme Court has ruled that exemptions for Orthodox Jews and Arabs being drafted into the Israel Army are unconstitutional. It's led to a bitter debate between those who believe every citizen should give something back to their country, and those who hold an Israeli passport but disagree with the Jewish state's politics. Orthodox Jews have also been excused from service in order to concentrate on their religious studies, but that could soon be about to end.

Israel's illegal immigrants

Observers warned Israeli authorities that the influx of illegal immigrants was a timebomb. They now say it has gone off, with Jewish residents in southern Tel Aviv attacking and insulting Africans there. On the political front, the Israeli Interior Minister recently called for most illegal immigrants to be jailed because they are criminals. Racism, government failure or unwillingness to deal with the issue and poverty are some of the ingredients that make up the volatile mix of South Tel Aviv.

'The Battle of the Empty Stomachs'

Palestinians nicknamed it "the battle of the empty stomachs". For weeks, 1,600 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails refused food and drink in what became the longest ever mass hunger strike. Israel finally capitulated and a deal was reached, allowing those in isolation back onto the general wards, and visas for those family members wishing to visit from Gaza. In exchange, prisoners agreed not to carry out "security activities" such as recruiting for terrorist missions.

West Bank Palestinians complain of rising censorship

The Palestinian Authority appears to be clamping down on dissent in the West Bank, blocking access to internet news sites and arresting journalists who are suspected of libel against leading Palestinian politicians. The growing censorship has surprised outside observers, many of whom considered Palestinian internet use relatively free compared with neighbouring countries.

Israelis prepare for possibility of Iran conflict

In recent months Israeli officials have increasingly warned that Iran is close to building a nuclear bomb, and that a pre-emptive strike may be necessary to avert the threat. At home, Israelis are divided on the question of war with Iran. Meanwhile, Israeli emergency services say everything is in place in case the worst comes to the worst.

A taste of freedom in Gaza

More than a thousand Palestinian prisoners found freedom when Hamas released a single Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, at the end of 2011. Hundreds of them headed to Gaza, even though many had never lived there before. A few weeks after their return, our reporter found out what became of three of these former prisoners.

Israel battles illegal immigration

Despite the introduction of new legislation, known as the "anti-infiltration bill", which can send those who enter Israel illegally to prison for up to three years, authorities are struggling to keep the flow of immigrants in check. Most of Israel's African immigrants remain in limbo and are unable to work because of the documents they are given. Our Middle East correspondent Gallagher Fenwick reports.
