Romania's long-standing fascination with all things French

The French influence has long been felt in Romania, which in the past has enjoyed a special relationship with France. While that's not so much the case today, there are still French speakers and Francophiles to be found in the country and similarities to be found in their respective languages. The historic links between East and West therefore look likely to continue - linguistically at least.

The marriage may not be legal in the eyes of the law, but for the Roma, it's binding for life.

Romania is gripped by an unprecedented political crisis. Parliament suspended centre-right President Traian Basescu on July 16th. The opposition call it a coup d'état organised by a coalition of socialists and liberals. Brussels and Washington have voiced concerns about what they say are undemocratic developments, but the fate of Romania is still in the hands of Romanians. On Sunday, they will vote in a referendum on whether or not to back the suspension of President Basescu.

They abandoned them in the Danube delta, where the animals became wild again and took control of their new territory.
