The housing crisis and economic slowdown have contributed to a large increase in the number of people in homeless shelters. Our correspondents went to meet some of them in Cleveland, Ohio, where it was hard to find any Republican supporters.
Rural Ohio used to be staunch Republican territory. But farmers are disillusioned with John McCain's plans to cut their subsidies, and some will be voting for Barack Obama instead. The race in this swing state promises to be very close.
