South Sudan mired in tribal conflict

Last July, the world's youngest country, South Sudan, peacefully seceded from Sudan. Today, women and children are being killed and thousands of cattle stolen as the new country falls prey to inter-ethnic violence. In December, between 6,000 and 8,000 fighters from one ethnic group attacked another, in a brutal escalation of tit-for-tat attacks.

Thousands were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in the violence that followed Kenya's elections in 2008. Many of the victims are still waiting for justice. The International Criminal Court is due to decide whether to try six suspects accused of orchestrating the violence, two of whom are planning to run for the presidency in elections later this year.

Amnesty and Human Rights Watch accuse the government of indiscriminately bombing rebel-held areas in oil-rich South Kordofan state. Verdicts in the trial of 6 alleged orchestrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide are due this Friday at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. The cases relate to alleged crimes committed in the area of Butare. Among the accused is former Minister of Family and Women's Affairs, Pauline Nyiramasuhuko - the first woman ever to be charged with genocide by an international court.

As voting day approaches, fears mount for northerners in South Sudan

On January 9th, people living in the south of Sudan will go to the polls to decide if they want to break away from the rest of the country and become independent. The international community is watching closely; US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has described the vote as "a ticking time bomb". If the south does break away, northerners living there fear they may come under attack - something that the local security forces are well aware of.

The United Nations are meeting to discuss the Millennium Development Goals set for 2015. An injection of substantial funds in a few villages are designed to create a new development model. Sauri, in western Kenya, is the first village to have been created. The project has expanded and now covers more than 70,000 people.
