Louvre opens branch in region hit by industrial decline

Paris’s famous Louvre museum, home of the Mona Lisa, opened its first regional offshoot on Tuesday in Lens, a former mining town in northern France, in an effort to breathe life into a region hit hard by the effects of industrial decline.

The Louvre rolls out the red carpet for new Islamic art department

Twenty years after Pei’s glass pyramid, the Louvre is inaugurating a new space — the department of Islamic Art. The building, a bedouin-looking tent, is situated in the Visconti courtyard and designed by Mario Bellini and Rudy Rucciotti. From the Arab conquest in the 7th century to the end of the Ottoman empire to the Spanish Al-Andalus kingdom, the new display showcases the many faces of art in the Islamic world. It opens to the public on 22nd September.
