Hunger striking Tymoshenko transferred from jail to hospital

Ukraine's former PM Yulia Tymoshenko has been taken to hospital in the eastern city of Kharkiv. It's been nearly three weeks since she went on hunger strike in prison in protest at her treatment. She was sentenced to seven years in jail last October, having been found guilty of abusing her power while in office. But her supporters say she has been the victim of a smear campaign carried out by President Victor Yanukovich, who beat her in elections two years ago.

The health of Ukraine's former Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, is of growing concern. Tymoshenko was sentenced to seven years in prison last October for alleged abuse of office over a gas contract signed with Russia in 2009. The EU, the US and Russia have all said the sentence was politically motivated and unfair, however disadvantageous the gas contract might have been. Worse, there are now accusations that the Ukrainian authorities may be trying to kill her through neglect.
