Iraqi forces and US troops have arrested a Sunni Arab militia leader who was a US ally in the fight against al Qaeda, officials said Sunday. Nadhim al-Jubouri is accused in connection with killings in largely Shiite town of Dujail in 2006-2007.
At least nine people were killed on Saturday when a suicide bomber targeted Sunni Arab militiamen, or Sahwas, at their headquarters, south of Baghdad. The US-allied patrolmen have been playing a crucial role in cutting down violence in Iraq.
Sunni militiamen in central Baghdad surrendered their arms under threat of heavy reprisals after two days of intense clashes with US-backed Iraqi forces.The Awakening (Sahwa) militia was trained by the US army to fight al Qaeda.
