Michael Phelps broke his own world 200-metre medley record at the US Olympic swim trials on Friday. This leaves Phelps qualified in four individual events for the Beijing Olympics.

Kosuke Kitajima eclipsed Amercian Brendan Hansen's men's 200 metres breastroke world record at an Olympic send-off competition. The Japanese swimmer, a double Olympic gold medallist, improved on the existing record by almost a second.

Former Manaudou coach under investigation
Philippe Lucas was taken into custody on Friday after being questioned in Melun, where he used to train Olympic swimming champion Laure Manaudou. Under investigation for theft and forgery, he claims innocence.

A European record was broken by France’s Amaury Leveaux in the 50 meter freestyle. He was only ten-one-hundredth of a second from the world record.

100-metres world record holder Alain Bernard secured his ticket to the Summer Olympics after winning the French championship in that race on Thursday. Times clocked during the event keep Bernard and the French relay's medal hopes alive.
