English tabloid The Sun agreed to pay out-of-court damages to Italian defender Marco Materazzi, according to the player's lawyer. The newspaper claimed Materazzi called Zinedine Zidane "son of a terrorist" before the French player headbutted him.

Spain to bid for 2018 World Cup
The Spanish Football Federation will be a candidate to host the 2018 World Cup, the body's newly re-elected chief, Angel Maria Villar, announced. Spain last hosted the competition in 1982.
