Georgia, Russia cut diplomatic ties

Friday 29 August 2008

Georgian authorities said they would recall their diplomatic staff in Moscow following Russia's recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In turn, Moscow announced it would close its embassy in the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

Georgia is to withdraw all diplomats from its Moscow embassy within days, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said Friday.

"Within the coming days, Georgia will withdraw all diplomats from its embassy in Moscow," the head of the foreign ministry's press department, Khatuna Iosava told AFP.
