Afghanistan to host summit on returning refugees
Afghanistan will host on Wednesday a summit on Afghan refugees. With five of the eight million refugee Afghans returning after the fall of the Taliban regime, this will be the largest repatriation program ever organised.
A conference in Kabul on Wednesday aims to establish a long-term strategy for the return and reintegration of refugees in Afghanistan.
The government plans to use a portion of the 20 billion dollars which were pledged in the Paris conference for Afghan reconstruction in June.
In 2002, the government initiated a wide-range operation to repatriate its citizens. Many can't return to their home villages and towns for security reasons, or because their old houses are now occupied by new residents.
