Reuters - Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano narrowly won election on Thursday to become the International Atomic Energy Agency's next director-general, participants in the closed-door vote told Reuters.

Amano scored the required 2/3 majority of IAEA governing board members expressing a preference, with 23 votes and one abstention in the 35-nation meeting, defeating his South African rival for the post.

Many nations had wanted an IAEA leader with broad consensus backing to tackle threats to the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.
