AFP - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcame swirling on-court winds to beat his compatriot Richard Gasquet for a place in the quarter-finals at the Japan Open tennis tournament on Thursday.

The 2008 Australian Open finalist and second seed displayed fine reflexes at the net to complete a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win played out as winds from Typhoon Melor lashed the country.

Defending champion Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic outclassed Andreas Beck of Germany 6-4, 6-1, while Australian former world number one Lleyton Hewitt eliminated France's Fabrice Santoro 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Tsonga described the nearly unplayable conditions as "very tough" after his 99-minute second-round match. "I think I served better than (Gasquet). That made the difference," he added.

After the two Frenchmen squared the contest at one set all, Gasquet double-faulted on a break point to go 0-1 down in the first game of the final set.

In comparison, Tsonga unleashed aces to defend against two break points in the fourth game to increase his lead to 3-1.

Tsonga, ranked seventh against Gasquet's 53rd, took a comfortable 0-40 triple break opportunity in the eighth game when a Gasquet backhand pass went wide, before calmly serving out for the match.

In the quarter-finals on Friday, he will take on Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis, who defeated Juan Monaco when the Argentine retired at 6-3, 4-1.

Another qualifier, Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France, who shocked Juan Martin del Potro in the first round on Tuesday, continued his run by beating Austria's Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to set up a meeting with Hewitt.

Earlier in the day, Hewitt dashed Santoro's first and last visit to Tokyo in one hour 51 minutes.

The veteran 36-year-old Frenchman, who is due to retire at the end of the season, watched his one-set advantage dissolve into a three-set loss to the eighth seed.

"I've never been in Japan. This year is my last year (on the tour) and I couldn't end my career without coming to Tokyo," said Santoro, ranked 42nd in the world.

"I wanted to win the match today and stay here till the weekend."

In the last match of the day, Russia's Mikhail Youzhny squeezed through to a 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (5/7), 6-4 victory over Gilles Simon of France for a place against Berdych.

Briton Andy Murray pulls out of Shanghai Masters
Andy Murray has decided to withdraw from next week's Shanghai Masters because of a wrist injury. The 22-year-old Scot has been advised by doctors to rest, with his possible return now pencilled in as the Valencia Open on November 2.
By News Wires (text)

REUTERS - World number three Andy Murray has withdrawn from next week's inaugural $5.25 million Shanghai Masters because of a wrist injury, organisers said on Thursday.

The Briton, who also missed this week's Japan Open for the same reason, joined world number one Roger Federer in pulling out of the penultimate Masters series event of the season.

Murray sustained the injury in Cincinnati in August and, after a medical examination on Wednesday, was advised to rest his wrist for two to three weeks, according to a statement.

"I apologise for the inconvenience that my withdrawal may cause but I trust you understand, the situation is beyond my control and I would much rather participate in the tournament than be in the current position regarding my health," Murray said in a letter to organisers.

Murray and Federer, who cited fatigue when he pulled out of the event, are among five players who have already secured their places at November's season-ending World Tour Finals in London.

World number two Rafa Nadal, also competing at the China Open in Beijing this week, heads the field at the Shanghai Masters at the Qizhong arena from Oct. 11-18.

Robert Kubica to replace Alonso at Renault
Poland's Robert Kubica (pictured) is to join the Renault Formula One team, replacing Fernando Alonso as of next season, the team, which has had a scandal-hit year, said in a statement.
By News Wires (text)

REUTERS - Poland's Robert Kubica will replace Spain's double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso at Renault next season, the team said in a statement on Wednesday.

No details were given about the length of the contract, although Renault said it was from 2010 onwards.

Kubica has driven for the BMW-Sauber team since 2006 while Alonso, one of the 24-year-old's best friends in the paddock, is moving to Ferrari next year.

The Pole won last year's Canadian Grand Prix and had been approached by several teams, including Toyota and Williams, once BMW announced they were quitting the sport at the end of the season.

"I am very happy I will be joining Renault in the 2010 season," Kubica said.

"I feel I have a special connection with this team because in 2005 I won the World Series by Renault. This gave me the chance to test with the team in Barcelona, which led to my debut in Formula One.

"I share with Renault a strong winning mentality and feel comfortable with their friendly and open attitude," he added in a statement.

"I'm highly motivated and optimistic that together we can be at the front of the grid next year and, hopefully, fighting for the world title."

Former champions Renault are licking their wounds after a scandal-hit year, with the team handed a suspended permanent ban from the sport for their role in a race-fixing controversy.

Former boss

Flamboyant former team boss Flavio Briatore has been banned for life and engineering head Pat Symonds barred for five years.

Kubica, an extremely quick and aggressive driver, has a no-nonsense style that will fit in well with the team's restructuring.

The tall Pole has also come up the hard way, with no family wealth to support him and from a country with no previous involvement in Formula One.

Although he had an impressive first test with Renault, he was snapped up by BMW-Sauber from under their noses as a test driver. He then replaced Canada's 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve as a race driver half way through 2006.

"Ever since Robert made his Grand Prix debut in 2006, he has been on our radar as one of the most naturally talented drivers of his generation," said Renault's acting team principal Bob Bell.

"He has delivered on that promise so it's great to have secured him in one of our cars next season. Renault has high ambitions and hopes for the future of the team and we feel that Robert can play a big role in fulfilling them."

Renault did not mention the second driver, currently French rookie Romain Grosjean.

Yankees thrash Twins, Dodgers grind past St Louis
New York Yankees has thrsahed Minnesota Twins in the opening game of their AL Division series. In the NL Division, the Los Angeles Dodgers triumphed over the St Louis Cardinals as Philadelphia beat Colorado Rockies.
By News Wires (text)

REUTERS - Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui supplied the punch that supported pitcher CC Sabathia in the New York Yankees' 7-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the opening game of their AL Division series on Wednesday.

In the NL Division, the Los Angeles Dodgers triumphed 5-3 over the St Louis Cardinals, while World Series champions Philadelphia made a confident start to the postseason with a 5-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the other NLDS opener.

The Twins, who arrived in New York at 3 a.m. (0700 GMT) after their thrilling Tuesday night win over Detroit for the AL Central title, struck first with two runs in the third inning.

Yankees captain Jeter wiped out the deficit in the bottom of the third, however, smacking a hanging curve from Twins
rookie Brian Duensing down the left-field line to score the first postseason homer in the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium.

"That's Derek Jeter this time of the year," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of the shortstop, whose round-tripper brought home Melky Cabrera and was the 18th of his postseason career.

Nick Swisher doubled in a run in the fourth, and Alex Rodriguez stroked an RBI single in the fifth just before Matsui's powering homer rattled around in Monument Park behind the wall in dead center to put the game out of reach.

Sabathia yielded two runs, one unearned, in six and two-thirds innings, and gave up only eight hits while striking out eight with no walks.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said his team ran into double-trouble -- Sabathia's pitching and the Yankee lineup.

"Everyone is a stinking All-Star," moaned Gardenhire of the Yankees' star-studded batting order.

The best-of-five series resumes on Friday in the Bronx, where regular season leaders New York (103-59) will try to extend their record this year against Minnesota to 9-0.

DODGERS LEAN ON BULLPEN

The Los Angeles Dodgers faced stiffer resistance against St Louis in a laborious contest that left 30 players on base, an MLB playoff record for a nine-inning game.

Matt Kemp belted a two-run homer in the first, but the Dodgers had to rely on their bullpen to close out the game.

Jeff Weaver was credited with the win, one of five relief pitchers used, after relieving first-time playoff starter Randy Wolf in the fourth.

"Our bullpen is great, they've been doing it all year," Kemp said.

LEE OMINOUS

Philadelphia used a mid-game one-two punch to knock out the Rockies, breaking a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

The fifth-inning damage came on Raul Ibanez's RBI-double and a run-scoring single by Carlos Ruiz off starter Ubaldo Jimenez.

In the next frame, Ryan Howard stroked a run-scoring double, Jayson Werth belted an RBI triple, and a single from Ibanez made it 5-0 -- a daunting lead with Cliff Lee in ominous form.

Colorado finally scored in the ninth, but Lee bowed with a six-hit, complete game win in his first playoff start.

"We hit the ball very good and Cliff pitched a hell of a game," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

Adebayor still fancies Togo's chances to reach World Cup
Togo's campaign for the 2010 World Cup finals got off to a flying start with victory over Cameroon, but the team have since failed to secure another win. Star striker Emmanuel Adebayor explains why he thinks they can still make the cut.
By FRANCE 24 (text)

Togo, led by star striker Emmanuel Adebayor, faces an uphill task to qualify for the finals of the World Cup in South Africa next year. After an impressive start, the team is now lagging in third place in Africa's Group A, behind Caemroon and Gabon. The Togolese know they must now beat both teams if they are to stand a chance.

Adebayor still fancies his team's chances, though he know the odds are against them ahead of their trip to Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon: “We messed up. We lacked concentration after the Cameroon victory [1-0] and played two poor matches”. But, he added, Togo is always better when least expected.

The Manchester City striker cast doubt on the wisdom of sacking Belgian coach Jean Thissen seven months into the job. At this stage of the qualifiers, he said, changing coach could hardly be a smart choice.

France's Ribéry ruled out of crunch World Cup qualifiers
A tendinitis in the left knee has forced France playmaker Franck Ribéry to pull out of the team to face Austria and the Faroe Islands in crucial World Cup qualifying matches.
By News Wires (text)

AFP - Franck Ribery has been ruled out of France's World Cup qualifying matches against Austria and the Faroe Islands due to tendinitis in his left knee, the country's coaching set-up announced on Monday.

The Bayern Munich winger was ruled out of both matches after being seen by a specialist. No replacement has yet been named.

Ribery played from the start for Bayern against Cologne in the Bundesliga on Saturday but failed to shine in a drab 0-0 draw.

It was his second consecutive league start for the Bavarian giants after an injury-disrupted start to the season but he felt pain in his knee following the club's goalless draw at home to Juventus in the Champions League last Wednesday.

Having been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid in the summer, Ribery has cut an increasingly frustrated figure over the opening weeks of the 2009/10 campaign.

His club manager, Louis van Gaal, repeatedly refused to name him in Bayern's starting XI due to his injury problems and he has also been unable to dislodge Barcelona's Thierry Henry from the left flank in the French first team.

France host the Faroe Islands in Guingamp on Saturday before welcoming Austria to the Stade de France in Paris the following Wednesday.

They will also be without Bordeaux playmaker Yoann Gourcuff, who has been ruled out for up to 10 days with a hamstring injury.

Drug testers accused of leniency towards Astana
A report by France's anti-doping agency (AFLD) accuses the International Cycling Union (UCI) of adopting a lax attitude on doping tests when it came to the Astana team of Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador, French media say.
By News Wires (text)

AFP - The Astana team of Tour de France winner Alberto Contador and third placed Lance Armstrong were given an easy ride during dope tests at the 2009 event, two leading French newspapers said Monday.

They quoted a report by the French anti-doping agency AFLD accusing the International Cyclist Union (UCI) of failing to apply the rules properly to Astana, Le Monde and the Figaro said.

"For some teams, the unexpected nature of anti-doping tests did not exist on the Tour," the Figaro said, adding that the 10-page AFLD report was to be sent on Monday to the UCI and the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA).

The website Le Monde.fr gives details of how Kazakh-backed Astana was allowed to "always have the last tests in the morning, more time to go to the tester."

The daily said AFLD doctors noted that on the morning of July 11 in the Astana team hotel, UCI inspectors intervened allowing Astana riders an extra 45 minutes before testing, which was supposed to be carried out immediately under the rules.

"Such tolerance, granted without proper justification, in the absence of escorts, does not follow the faultless regularity of the procedure, particularly ensuring that no manipulation took place," the report said.

Other failures to follow the rules concerning all riders are contained in the report.

It also charges that UCI inspectors wrongly labelled tests carried out in team hotels in the mornings and evenings as "outside competition".

"This error is full of serious consequences," the report said, noting that the list of substances banned "in competition" is much more extensive than those banned outside.

Astana has had a stormy year with its financial future repeatedly in doubt. After Spain's Contador won the Tour, his teammate American Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour champion, promptly quit and has joined new American team Radio Shack.

Marseille lose 2-1 to Monaco to end miserable week
Olympique Marseille lost for the third time this week as Monaco claimed a 2-1 win at the Provence club's stadium. Marseille slip to fifth in the standings, six points behind leaders Lyon.
By News Wires (text)

Reuters - Olympique Marseille lost 2-1 at home to Monaco in Ligue 1 on Sunday to end a miserable week for the Provence club.

Marseille, thrashed 3-0 at Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, paid dearly for a poor first half.

Monaco, who proved sharp on the break, moved up to fourth in the standings with 15 points from eight games, Marseille slipping to fifth.

Olympique Lyon led the table on 20 points after beating RC Lens away on Saturday.

At the Stade Velodrome, Nene opened the scoring with a free kick from the edge of the box that took a deflection off Gonzalez's head in the 20th minute.

The visitors doubled the tally on 41 minutes when Park Chu-young outpaced the Marseille defence on the break to fire the ball past a helpless Steve Mandanda.

HIGH PRESSURE

Monaco found themselves under high pressure shortly after the hour with a Bruno Cheyrou strike smashing the woodwork and keeper Stephane Ruffier tipping a Stephane M'Bia header over his bar.

Senegal striker Mamadou Niang pulled one back with four minutes left, flicking the ball past Ruffier after being perfectly set up by Hatem Ben Arfa.

Earlier, Toulouse lost 1-0 at home to FC Lorient in Ligue 1 in a game marked by an emotional tribute to their fan who died this week.

In an emotional pre-match ceremony, Lorient and Toulouse players laid a wreath before the East curve in memory of Brice Taton, who passed away on Tuesday after being beaten by Partizan Belgrade fans at a Europa League game on Sept. 17.

The fans held a one-minute round of applause before kickoff.

Both teams failed to find their range until the 88th minute, when Olivier Monterrubio converted a penalty kick following a handball in the box by Etienne Didot.

Pierre-Alain Frau struck twice to give Lille a 3-2 win at promoted Boulogne.

Chelsea have 21 points after seven wins in their opening eight games while Liverpool drop out of the top four below Arsenal, who earlier hammered Blackburn Rovers 6-2.

Manchester United are second with 19 points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur on 16 with Arsenal and Liverpool on 15.

In Sunday's other games, Everton drew 1-1 against visiting Stoke City while West Ham United remain in the bottom three after a 2-2 home draw with 10-man Fulham.

Sebastian Vettel wins Japanese Grand Prix
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel has won the Japanese Grand Prix, with Jarno Trulli second in his Toyota and McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton third. The German led from start to finish to win his third victory of the season.
By News Wires (text)

REUTERS - Sebastian Vettel won the Japanese Grand Prix to keep his Formula One title hopes alive on Sunday while Jenson Button had his overall lead trimmed to 14 points with two races remaining.

The 22-year-old Red Bull driver's third victory of the season left the German 16 points adrift of Brawn's Button, who inched closer to the crown with a hard-fought eighth place.

"Finally we made it, I was screaming on the radio ... it's good to be back on first position also on Sunday," said Vettel, the first German from outside the Schumacher family to win three races in a single season.

Button's closest rival, Brazilian team mate Rubens Barrichello, crossed the line in seventh on a sunny afternoon at Suzuka.

Italian Jarno Trulli was second for Toyota in the team's home race, equalling their best result, while McLaren's Lewis Hamilton hung on for third ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

Germany's Nico Rosberg was fifth for Williams, with compatriot Nick Heidfeld sixth for BMW-Sauber.

Button would have clinched the title had he scored five points more than Barrichello but that had looked highly unlikely since Saturday, when both were handed five-place grid penalties.

Button's chances of sealing the championship in Japan seemed even more remote when he ended the first lap in 11th place, but he passed BMW-Sauber's Robert Kubica and was then gifted two more places when McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen and Force India's Adrian Sutil collided just ahead of him.

Brawn, who emerged from the remains of the Honda team only weeks before the season started, were left a tantalising half-point away from becoming the first team to secure the constructors' title in their debut season.

They now have 155 points to Red Bull's 120.5, with a maximum 36 still to be won.

Vettel had led comfortably from pole position but his advantage evaporated when the safety car was deployed late in the race, after Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari crashed, and stayed out until four laps from the finish.

The Spaniard was unhurt in the accident.

Loeb wins, Citroen clinch constructors world title
Frenchman Sebastien Loeb, with Spanish teammate Dani Sordo in second place, assuring the constructors world title for Citroen on Sunday. In the driver's standings, Loeb is one point behind Finn rival Mikko Hirvonen with only one race to go.
By News Wires (text)

AFP - Frenchman Sebastien Loeb took another step towards a sixth consecutive world rally championship title by winning the Rally of Spain, his sixth victory of the season, here on Sunday.

In finishing one-two, Loeb and Spaniard Dani Sordo assured the constructors world title for Citroen.

Loeb finished the weekend 12secs ahead of Citroen teammate Sordo, and a massive 54sec ahead of title rival Mikko Hirvonen of Finland.

Hirvonen, driving a Ford Focus, finished third to retain the championship lead but he now has only a one-point lead going into the 12th and final race at the Rally of Britain in Wales on October 23-25.

Hirvonen's presence has injected some much needed excitement into this year's championship and the Finn has pushed Loeb hard but with the race going right to the wire the Frenchman's experience could prove crucial.

Loeb looked to have closed to within one point of Hirvonen after winning the Rally of Australia in early September but the Finn was awarded the victory after stewards found that Loeb's Citroen anti-rollbars did not conform to FIA technical configurations.

Gilles Simon takes his first title of the year in Bangkok
Frenchman Gilles Simon beat Serbian Viktor Troicki 7-5 6-3 to win the Thailand Open final on Sunday. It's the first title this season and the sixth tournament win of his career for world number 10 Simon.
By News Wires (text)

REUTERS - Frenchman Gilles Simon claimed his first title of the year after a 7-5 6-3 win over Serbian Viktor Troicki in the $608,500 Thailand Open on Sunday.

The pair were evenly matched throughout the one hour, 15 minute encounter but it was the Serb's mistakes that ultimately cost him his first career title.

Simon, the world number 10, put in another consistent performance and held his game together in a battle of backcourt slugging.

Serb Troicki looked to have the upper hand when he broke Simon at 4-4 in the first set, but the Frenchman broke back and surged ahead to go one up as Troicki's powerful spin-loaded returns went off target.

Simon then broke in the sixth game of the second set after making what looked like a near-impossible return that the surprised Serb smashed into the net.

The win gave Simon his sixth career title and came after a month's layoff due to a knee injury sustained at the U.S. Open.

"This was the victory I needed to finish off the year," Simon told reporters.

"I've felt really good this week. It's not easy to win a tournament, you have to be at your best for every match.

"I played a bad service game and missed some points. I had to fight back, that was very important. I broke him and took the first set and after that, it was much easier."

Troicki vented his frustrations throughout the match and said he was disappointed with the outcome.

"I had a chance to beat a top 10 player and I didn't take it," he said.

"I was ahead and I made some good points in the first set, but after that I couldn't get the points because Simon played very well."
