    Clerical group protests Iran election result
    A pro-reform clerical group in Iran named the Assembly of Qom Seminary Scholars and Researchers has called the results of the June 12 presidential election into question, telling the Guardian Council it had lost its right to judge.
  • BULGARIA
    Opposition party looks to be victor in legislative elections
    Exit polls showed Bulgaria's opposition Gerb party the victor in legislative elections Sunday, ousting the ruling Socialist party. The Socialists conceded defeat after winning just 17.1-18.5 percent of the vote and 39 seats.
  • IRAN
    Tehran to release eighth British embassy worker; one still detained
    One of two British embassy employees still detained by Iranian authorities is to be released, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband told the BBC on Sunday. Tehran detained nine local staff members for their alleged role in post-election violence.

    Medvedev says US must compromise on missile shield
    A day before US President Barack Obama was expected in Moscow, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev (left) said the United States must compromise on plans to install a missile defence system in Europe if it wants a deal on nuclear disarmament.

    Six die in London tower block fire
    Six people, including a newborn baby, have died in a massive fire at a tower block in London, the city's emergency services said. Twelve more people were taken to the hospital, many suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

    At least nine Chechen police killed in Ingush attack
    At least nine members of the Chechen police force were killed after their car came under fire in the neighbouring Russian region of Ingushetia. The Chechen police were in Ingushetia to conduct joint operations against militants.
  • EUROPEAN UNION
    Barroso's EU re-election vote is delayed
    European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso's re-election vote has been delayed, probably until September, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said. Sweden currently holds holds the EU's rotating presidency.
  • GREECE
    Three separate attacks target top judge, government offices
    A car belonging to the chairman of Greece's top administrative court was destroyed in a bomb blast on Friday while a tax office was targeted in a separate attack and another bomb went off at a government-affiliated organisation, police say.
