FRANCE 24 to launch European Encounters broadcast from six countries - 20/06/2011

Latest update : 2011-06-20

FRANCE 24, the Paris-based 24/7 international news channel is launching its new European Encounters series, starting with a major debate in Poland on 21 June 2011.

FRANCE 24 has decided to host a series of debates from several European cities. The programme, called FRANCE 24 EUROPEAN ENCOUNTERS, will be recorded from cities such as Warsaw, Madrid, Rome, London and, after the summer break, Berlin and Istanbul.

The series will be presented by FRANCE 24 journalists and will consist of 40-minute debates on the social, political and economic issues shaping each country and its position in Europe today. In Warsaw, two separate debates entitled “Poland: a new model for Europe?” will be recorded in French and in English and broadcast on FRANCE 24 on 22 June 2011 at 5:15 pm GMT.

« From the prolonged global economic crisis to the revolts in the Arab world just outside Europe’s borders, international events are changing the traditional world order and we felt it was important to go and meet our European viewers,” says Alain de Pouzilhac, CEO of FRANCE 24.”By provoking debates, through confrontation of viewpoints and diversity of opinions, FRANCE 24 wishes to find out more about European perceptions on national identity and shaping Europe.”

The debate in Poland will be based on a nationwide public survey that has been commissioned by FRANCE 24 in cooperation with the GAZETA WYBORCZA daily newspaper in order to find out what the Polish citizens think about the present role of Poland in Europe.

The results of this study on how Polish citizens feel about their country’s membership in the EU, about their national identity and values, and about the role they feel Poland should play in the European community, will be presented to and discussed with the invited guests in the studio debate. *
