Ban Ki-moon: Syria has been an ‘international failure’

As he is about to leave the helm of the UN after 10 years, Ban Ki-moon expressed confidence that US President-elect Donald Trump will become a true global leader and embrace key international agreements. He also spoke to FRANCE 24 about the "international failure" on Syria.

'I was encouraged by what he said during his acceptance speech," Ban said of Trump, adding that they two spoke directly by phone and agreed to meet in person. "The issues which the United Nations has been dealing with are the issues of common humanity, particularly on climate change," Ban said.

Trump the president will have to take a different approach than Trump the business leader. "Now he's going to be a global political leader, he has to listen to the voices of people."

"I will deeply regret that we have not been able to see the end of this," Ban said of the Syrian crisis. "I think this is a common failure of the international community."
