Gazprom threatens to cut off Ukraine gas

Russian national gas company Gazprom has told Ukraine it will cut off gas supplies to its neighbour at the beginning of January if a new contract is not agreed.

    After a marathon negotiating session, EU farm ministers have come to a compromise on reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), notably with a reduction in subsidies for farmers. The changes will take effect from 2009 to 2013.

    IMF approves $2.1 billion loan
    The International Monetary Fund has approved a two-year loan of 2.1 billion dollars for Iceland to help the country rebound from a dire financial crisis. Iceland's banking system collapsed in just one week back in October.

    Serbia to counter-sue Croatia for war crimes
    After the International Court of Justice ruled it would hear Croatia's genocide claim against Serbia, Serbian FM Vuk Jeremic (pictured) stated it would counter-sue for crimes committed by Croatia during the 1991-95 war in Croatia.

    Opel studying move to 30-hour week
    German carmaker Opel, a subsidiary of General Motors which has called on the German government for guarantees, has announced it will cut its production and is considering adopting a 30-hour working week to avoid layoffs.

    Northern Ireland parties agree on police, justice
    The Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Féin have agreed on the establishment of a devolved police and justice system in the province. The issue had frozen the work of the power-sharing executive since June.

    Sharp fall in UK inflation in October
    Driven by lower oil and food prices, UK inflation fell sharply in October to 4.5%, according to official figures. This comes a day after British Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned of a risk of deflation in 2009, echoing the Bank of England.
