For you to choose: a field of crickets or a sky full of stars. Feet in the grass or in water. Music, food, theatre, film, and photography will shine in their many forms all summer long. Here are our recommended festivals.     For the 19th edition of the Forde folk music festival, the little Norwegian town curled up between mountains and waterfalls hosts representatives of forty-one nations for a joyful meeting of musical cultures.

    Discovering Rai music in Morocco
    In Oujda, Morocco, the second international festival of Rai music is a success. The festival gives young people a chance to forget their daily concerns about economic hardship.

    The city of Aix-Les-Bains is very well known for its thermal baths but it also hosts a music festival. This year's performers include Babyshambles, Yael Naim, Hocus Pocus - an ecclectic line-up to suit all musical tastes.

    Arles, city of photos
    The French southern city of Arles welcomes this year's photo festival -- one of the most important in the world. This year's commissioner is fashion designer Christian Lacroix, who has a personal interest of his own in the subject.
  • AVIGNON FESTIVAL
    Avignon, home of theatre
    The French city of Avignon is home to the world's most famous theatre festival. Every year, the city of Popes welcomes dozens of theatre companies, from classical to avant-garde. We met the renowned actor Philippe Caubère, an Avignon regular.
  • OPERA - FESTIVAL
    Aix greets Kiarostami's 'Così fan tutte'
    This year's opera festival in the French city of Aix en Provence presents Mozart's renowned "Così fan tutte". Its director is Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, whose "The taste of cherries" won the 2007 Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival.

    Inventing new moves and sticking up for cultural innovation - that's the project headed by the Montpellier dance festival in southern France, where 27 choreographers from 10 different countries aim to discover new aesthetic forms.

    Every June since 1998, the city of Essaouira celebrates the music of the descendants of African slaves called Gnawa. This year musician Wayne Shorter and Justin Adams mixed with the Moroccan music masters called <i>maâlem</i>.

    Artists and audiences from around the world have gathered in Fes to attend the 14th World Sacred Music Festival, which is a hymn to peace, harmony and inter-faith dialogue.
