Saudi Arabia denies offering Mullah Omar asylum

German magazine Der Spiegel had reported that Saudi King Abdullah offered political asylum to Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar in agreement with US President George W. Bush and Afghan president Hamid Karzai.

    Israel resumes blockade after allowing aid to pass
    Israel allowed 33 truckloads of supplies into Gaza for the first time in two weeks, then resealed border crossings citing continued rocket fire at its towns. Earlier, Oxfam had warned of a 'humanitarian disaster' in Gaza if the blockade remained.

    Pirates seize Saudi oil supertanker
    Pirates have commandeered a Saudi-owned crude oil supertanker off the east coast of Africa, US Navy sources said. The vessel, the largest to be seized in a recent spate of piracy in the region, is reportedly heading toward Somalia.

    US troop withdrawal 'should be conditions-based'
    The US troop withdrawal from Iraq, according to which troops will pull out by end of 2011, should be conditions-based, US military chief Admiral Michael Mullen said a day after the Iraqi cabinet approved a deal with the US.

    Israel to release 250 Palestinian prisoners after talks with Abbas
    Israel's interim PM Ehud Olmert has announced that Israel is to release 250 Palestinian prisoners as a signal of goodwill following talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

    Iraqi cabinet approves US troop withdrawal pact
    Pending parliamentary approval, the pact allows US forces to remain in Iraq for the next three years and includes a timetable for the withdrawal of US troops by the end of 2011. Also on Sunday, a suicide car bomber killed 15 people north of Baghdad.

    At least 26 people were killed and another 60 wounded in a series of attacks across Iraq, including 12 who died in a double bomb blast in Baghdad and two US soldiers killed when an Iraqi soldier on joint patrol opened fire.

    With hopes of bridging the sectarian divide, the authorities have reopened a bridge linking Sunni and Shiite districts that has been closed since 2005, when nearly 1,000 Shiite pilgrims were killed in a stampede.

    Archaeologists discover ancient queen's pyramid
    A team of Egyptian archaeologists have discovered a previously unknown pyramid, which probably housed the remains of Queen Sesheshet, hidden beneath 20 metres of sand. The monument is believed to date back to 2,700 BC.

    Secular hardliner elected mayor of Jerusalem
    Secular right-wing candidate Nir Barkat has won the Jerusalem mayoral election, defeating his ultra-Orthodox opponent with 52% of the vote. The controversial Russian-Israeli billionaire Arcady Gaydamak took just 3.6% of the vote.

    Four years after his death, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was commemorated at a massive gathering in the West Bank. But a year after a memorial rally in Gaza was marred by violence, there were no events planned in the Hamas-controlled region.

    IAEA finds uranium traces at bombed Syrian site
    Investigators for the International Atomic Energy Agency have reportedly found uranium traces at Al-Kibar, a suspected Syrian nuclear reactor site bombed by Israel in 2007. The finding was not conclusive, the IAEA said.
