- Soldiers shot at the house of Guinea-Bissau's president "Nino" Vieira early Sunday morning, but the authorities claimed to have regained control of the situation. The violence erupted one week after the release of parliamentary election results.

- Congolese rebel leader Laurent Nkunda slammed the deployment of an additional 3,000 troops in eastern DR Congo saying they could not usher peace. Nkunda held his first rally in Rutshuru, north of Goma, to garner support.

- Zimbabwe has refused former UN head Kofi Annan and ex-US President Jimmy Carter entry to the country. Carter said the Harare government had become "immune" to the suffering of its people. Robert Mugabe later denied barring Annan from the country.

- The UN announced Friday that a cholera outbreak has led to nearly 300 deaths. The disease is water-borne and is exacerbated by the unsanitary water facilities in the nation, says the UN.

- UN to deploy further 3,000 peacekeepers

- The UN Security Council has unanimously passed a resolution to boost its peacekeeping force in the Democratic Republic of Congo by a further 3,000. This brings the total number of troops to more than 20,000.

- South Africa blocks aid until new government formed

- South Africa has blocked nearly 30 million dollars of aid to Zimbabwe until the creation of a new government there. The agricultural aid to Zimbabwe was approved last month, subject to conditions, to help short-term food needs.
