Opposition gathers for ultimate anti-govt rally

Critics of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat's government assembled in Bangkok on Sunday to stage a mass demonstration and disrupt Monday's scheduled parliamentary session. Police forces have deployed around the parliament.

    German magazine Der Spiegel had reported that Saudi King Abdullah offered political asylum to Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar in agreement with US President George W. Bush and Afghan president Hamid Karzai.

    French soldier killed near Kabul
    A French soldier was killed when a mine exploded near Kabul, bringing the death toll of French troops killed in Afghanistan to 25. One of his colleagues was seriously injured in the blast.

    Bush, Hu Jintao discuss N. Korea, financial crisis
    Chinese President Hu Jintao met US President George W. Bush on the eve of the APEC summit in Peru, which will focus on the global economic downturn. The two leaders discussed North Korea's nuclear programme and the financial crisis.

    Alleged UK bomb plotter 'killed' in US raid
    British Islamist militant Rashid Rauf, wanted for a 2006 airline plot, was among those killed in a US missile raid in the northern tribal region of Pakistan, according to local sources.

    Celebrity comedian sentenced to 45 years in jail
    One of Burma's most famous comedians, who goes by the name of Zarganar, was sentenced Friday to 45 years in prison. Zarganar was arrested in June after organising aid deliveries to victims of Cyclone Nargis.

    Tibetan exiles back Dalai Lama's policy of dialogue with China
    The Tibetan government-in-exile has announced it will continue with the Dalai Lama's "Middle Way" approach, which aims to achieve greater autonomy within China through dialogue.
