French opposition approves environment package
A year after its instigation, a law reflecting the commitments of the so-called Grenelle Environment Round Table was approved by France's lower house on Tuesday afternoon, after opposition Socialist lawmakers opted to support it.

In the first instance of the French Socialist lawmakers siding with the government in the current parliamentary session, opposition MPs voted unanimously Tuesday to support a major environmental package.
The lawmakers agreed to back the so-called “Grenelle Environnement” package, the president of the Socialist Party group in the French National Assembly, Jean-Marc Ayrault, told Agence France-Presse.
France's lower house is expected to approve the package in a vote Tuesday afternoon.
The package was devised during a conference, the so-called "Grenelle Environment Round Table," which brought together the government, local authorities, trade unions, business and voluntary sectors to draw up a plan of action of concrete measures to tackle the environmental issue.
The name “Grenelle” comes from the first conference bringing all these players together, which took place in May 1968 in the Rue de Grenelle.
