Only three French players remain as as we go into the third round of the tournament on Friday. Aravane Rezai faces the young Portuguese prodigy, Michelle Larcher de Brito, on the Phillippe-Chatrier court. Josselin Ouanna is set to meet Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez (ranked 16) and Gilles Simon plays against Romania’s Victor Hanescu (30).
The matches have weeded out all players but those at the top of their game. Stanislas Wawrinka (ranked 17) and Nikolay Davydenko (10) play on court 7, Radek Stepanek (18) and Croat Marin Cilic (13) on court 2 and Sweden’s Robin Soderling (23) and Spain’s David Ferrer (14) on court 1.
Still in the running is the women's world number one Dinara Safina, who will face fellow Russian, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Previous French Open winner Ana Ivanovic plays the Czech Republic’s Iveta Benesova, while Maria Sharapova – making a comeback – is up against Kazak Yaroslava Shvedova.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal faces off with Australian Lleyton Hewitt on the Philippe-Chartier court. And last but not least, Scotsman Andy Murray has to defeat Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic if he intends to make it into the next round.
