Frenchman Jean-Marie Balestre, considered one of motorsport's leading pioneers, died two weeks before turning 87. He served at the head of the International Federation of Automobile Sports (FISA) for 23 years between 1978 and 1991.

Raikkonen strolls to victory in Malaysia
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen won the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday, finishing ahead of BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica and McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen, while Championship leader Lewis Hamilton crossed the line a disappointing fifth.

Jean Todt bids farewell to Ferrari
After stepping down as sporting director of the Formula One Ferrari team at the end of the last season, Frenchman Jean Todt has resigned as executive director of the whole Ferrari group, thereby ending a prolific 15-year career at the "Scuderia".

Hamilton off to flying start
Lewis Hamilton won the opening Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, after an accident-strewn race where only seven of the 22 cars on the grid crossed the finishing line. The Briton finished ahead of Germany's Nick Heidfeld and Nico Rosberg.

Ralf Schumacher joins Mercedes
After failing to find a Formula One drive, Ralf Schumacher said that he will race a Mercedes in the German Touring Car championship (DTM). His first race will be at Hockenheim on April 13.
