UN 'to probe Baghdad truck bombings'

AFP - The United Nations has agreed to investigate the devastating truck bombings which rocked Baghdad two months ago and any role foreign states may have played, Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said Wednesday.
Zebari told a media conference in the capital the UN Security Council would appoint an investigator in response to a call by Iraq for an independent probe into the August bombings of two ministries, which killed almost 100 people.
"What we agreed in New York, with the UN Secretary General, is the nomination of a UN employee who will make an assessment on foreign intervention in Iraq, and will also investigate the causes and consequences of the crimes of August 19," Zebari told reporters.
"We can inform you now that there are consultations within the UN Security Council to nominate the person who will carry out the investigation."
The UN mission in Baghdad declined to confirm the announcement, referring media inquiries to UN headquarters in New York.
Baghdad has accused neighbouring Syria of harbouring the masterminds behind the ministry bombings, and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki alleges that 90 percent of foreign militants who infiltrate Iraq do so via Syria.
Talks between Syria and Iraq, most recently mediated by Turkey, have so far failed to mend ties between the two countries.
Zebari said last month Damascus has not taken the talks seriously.
