Sunderland manager Steve Bruce suffered a miserable return to Birmingham as his former club claimed a 2-1 victory. Goals from Liam Ridgewell and James McFadden, pictured here on October 3, either side of half-time at St Andrews piled on the pain for Bruce, who saw Scott Dann's late own goal briefly give hope of a draw.

AFP - Tottenham Hotspur missed the chance to join champions Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table after losing 1-0 late on to Stoke City at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

The match was goalless until four minutes from time when Glen Whelan, played in by Ricardo Fuller, struck against a Tottenham team down to 10 men with England winger Aaron Lennon off the field after the Londoners had used all three of their substitutions.

Chelsea though can restore capital pride by going above United and into top spot if they beat Blackburn in Saturday's late kick-off at Stamford Bridge.

At the bottom of the table, basement club Portsmouth were held to a goalless draw by fellow strugglers Hull.

In Saturday's other Premier League matches, Birmingham beat their former manager Steve Bruce's Sunderland side 2-1 and Colombia's Hugo Rodallega scored twice as Wigan came from behind to end Burnley's 100 percent home record this term in a 3-1 win.

Earlier, Wolves drew 1-1 with Midlands rivals Aston Villa.

Tottenham went close on several occasions during the first-half with Stoke's James Beattie clearing off the line from England striker Peter Crouch before Niko Kranjcar, the Croatia midfielder, hit the post from 25 yards out.

Stoke goalkeeper Steve Simonsen, a late call-up after Thomas Sorensen pulled out through illness, made several fine saves for the visitors.

And in the 86th minute, Jamaica striker Fuller burst past Benoit Assou-Ekotto down the right and pulled the ball back for Whelan, who angled his shot past Heurelho Gomes as City won their first away league games this season.

Burnley took an early lead at Turf Moor when Steven Fletcher turned in Robbie Blake's cross in the fourth minute.

But Wigan equalised in bizarre fashion seven minutes later when Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen slipped as he came for a Mario Melchiot cross, allowing Rodallega to shoot into the unguarded net.

Jensen went off injured moments later.

Rodallega then made it 2-1 to Wigan when he turned in Jason Scotland's 51st minute cross.

Wigan then made sure of ending a run of four straight away defeats in all competitions in the 76th minute when Emmerson Boyce scored from a corner.

At St Andrews, in Birmingham's first home game since Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung bought the club, the Blues went ahead eight minutes before half-time when Liam Ridgewell got on the end of a Sebastian Larsson free-kick.

And soon after the break Scotland striker James McFadden doubled Birmingham's lead following good work by Larsson.

But Sunderland game themselves a lifeline when Birmingham's Scott Dann put through his own net eight minutes from time.

In a dire opening period at the KC Stadium, Portsmouth striker Tommy Smith squandered a couple of chances for the visitors.

After half-time, Pompey's Aruna Dindane and Hassan Yebda were both denied in quick succession by Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill.

It was all square in the early kick-off at Molineux until England forward Gabriel Agbonlahor put visitors Villa ahead 11 minutes from time.

But Wolves rescued a point four minutes later when, after Steve Sidwell's rash challenge on Michael Kightly, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake struck from the penalty spot to score his first Premier League goal.

United will definitely end the weekend on top if they win away to arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Arsenal travel to West Ham for an all-London clash, Manchester City at home to Fulham and Everton make the short journey to Bolton.
