Morales boasts of Castro, Chavez support
AFP - Bolivia's newly reelected President Evo Morales boasted Tuesday that he had received congratulations from fellow anti-US figures Fidel Castro of Cuba and President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.
"Fidel and Hugo Chavez sent congratulations" over his poll win on Sunday, in which he grabbed more than 60 percent of ballots according to exit polls, he told pro-government union leaders.
They welcomed the "ratification of an anti-imperialist ideological position and program" he advanced, he said.
He, Castro and Chavez all use the terms "imperialist" and "empire" to designate the United States, which they see as a belligerent and wildly capitalist nemesis.
Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous president, trounced his country's conservative opposition in the presidential and legislative elections.
Official results were due later Tuesday.
They were expected to confirm that Morales won a second term by a landslide and that his ruling Movement Towards Socialism party grabbed two-thirds of the seats in Congress, giving him freedom to pursue leftist reforms that have already shaken up Bolivia's economy and society.
Morales, 50, made no mention of congratulations the US government said it had sent him on Monday.
Morales ordered the US ambassador and US Drug Enforcement Administration officials out of Bolivia last year after accusing them of trying to undermine his government.
The United States has denied allegations of a conspiracy to overthrow Morales and, under President Barack Obama, started negotiations earlier this year to establish a new diplomatic agreement.
