Tour winner Contador to face disciplinary action

The UCI international cycling authority said Monday it was asking the Spanish cycling federation to open disciplinary procedures against Tour de France champion Alberto Contador after it was revealed he had failed a drug test taken in July.

AFP - World cycling's governing body UCI confirmed Monday they are demanding the opening of disciplinary procedures against Tour de France winner Alberto Contador of Spain, who it was revealed failed a drugs test.

This action would be taken by the Spanish cycling federation whose decision it would be whether to sanction the rider.

Contador, 27, won his third yellow jersey in July, but it was later revealed that he tested positive for trace amounts of the banned substance clenbuterol during the second rest day of the Tour de France at Pau on July 21.

Contador claims he ate contaminated meat, although sceptics suggest he may have inadvertently put clenbuterol -- a weight-loss and muscle-building drug -- back into his system via an illicit and performance-enhancing blood transfusion.

Provisionally suspended by the UCI, Contador's future is hanging in the balance. If suspended for two years, he has threatened to quit the sport.

If Contador was sanctioned he would be stripped of this year's Tour de France title. He also won the world's most prestigious cycling race in 2007 and 2009.

Contador signed a two-year contract with the Saxo Bank team in August.

Contador

He's been found guilty so he should be banned, pure and simple!! Cheats do not prosper!! The sport, which as been trying to clear up its act unlike some other sports, will be better off without him. Cycling is doing its utmost to drive the cheats out, any weakening now just because it is Contador will send the wrong message out around the world. We do NOT want that great spectacle - the Tour de France - and other great races - Paris/Nice, Paris/Roubaix etc - to be tarnished. The only sentence MUST be a two year ban.
