France readies for ban on full Islamic veil
The controversial French ban on wearing a full veil in public comes into force on April 11. The law, which forbids the wearing of full face coverings, would affect an estimated 2,000 Muslim women in France who wear the "niqab".

The controversial ban on wearing a full face veil in public places comes into force on April 11 in France.
Last week French Interior Minister Claude Gueant signed a circular, sent to all law enforcement agencies, “for instructions on carrying out identity checks and for the issuing of fines”.
According to the document, which was published by right-leaning daily newspaper Le Figaro, police officers do not have the right to forcibly remove a veil.
“Either the person wearing the veil removes it, or else that person is conducted to a police station so that their identity can be verified,” the circular instructs.
In no instance can a woman wearing a niqab be placed under arrest simply for wearing the full veil. But she can be held at a police station for up to four hours, held liable for a 150 euro fine and required to take a citizenship course.
Defining 'public spaces'
The circular also defines the public spaces where wearing a veil would be banned as all places open to the public, including parks, shops, cinemas, restaurants and public transport.
The face, however, can be covered in the home, in hotel rooms, on corporate premises, in private vehicles and at places of worship.
The law also stipulates that forcing someone to wear a veil, through “abuse of authority or power”, is a much more serious criminal offence, punishable by a prison sentence.
The legislation does not explicitly target Muslim women, instead banning any full face covering that masks one’s identity. A man could be similarly fined for wearing a ski mask in a restaurant or on a bus.
French Islam under the microscope
There are only about 2,000 women in France who wear the niqab facial veil (a burqa, in contrast, covers all of the body except the hands).
But the ban would also apply to foreign women visiting France as tourists, many of them big spenders on French haute couture from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states.
The law comes into effect at a time when the role of Islam in France is once again under the microscope.
President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party opens a debate Tuesday on the influence of Islamic practices, and Islam itself, on the strictly secular but traditionally Catholic country.
Critics believe that this new debate on secularism, like the law against wearing the veil, is a political ploy to win voters away from the far-right National Front, which has made gains while Sarkozy’s approval ratings plummet.

why.?
Why.? Are They Doing This To The Muslim Women? Its Just Not Right. Youu Just Cant Take Away There Religion Or Ther Beliefs. And Everyone Is Diffrent Its Like Telling A Japanese That They Cant Wear There Komonos In Public If They Are In A Diffrent Cuntry Appart From There Own. Youu Just Cant Do That To A Human Being. There Is Something Called Human Rights Or Do These People Going To Talke That Away Aswell .? Presonaly I Think Its Not Right .
I request the French police
I request the French police to strictly enforce the Burqa ban.
Long live France and her culture.
your loss - our gain
Apart from the islamophobic element behind all this, if France wishes to effectively ban high-spending Saudi women from the boulevards of Paris then so be it. We in London will happily take their money and enjoy the added benefit of international recognition of being a liberal international world capital city, unlike Paris.
So glad to not be French
I am not the same type of muslim. My wife does not cover her face. But this is not freedom and democracy. The French government is abusing the rights of this minority group. I'm so glad I'm from South Africa, a truly free country!
God Bless France
ITS YOUR COUNTRY, MADE BY YOU AND YOUR REVOLUTION, ANY ONE WANNA LIVE AMONG YOU SHOULD RESPECT THE LAWS, IT IS A CHANCE FOR ISLAM TO PROVE WHAT THEY BEEN SAYING PEACEFUL RELIGION !!!!IS IT ?
No hoodies?
It is beyond belief that the state (whichever state)feels that other than public nudity it can tell you what you can and cannot wear. For pity's sake - it's just a piece of clothing! If I'm riding my bicycle - and it's cold, does that mean no covering my nose and mouth with a scarf? What about nuns and covering their hair - are they next? We used to laugh at the Albanian beard-ban, but it's starting to look like it's coming our way. As middle aged white Christian man - i'm strongly considering taking up the veil - to show the absurdity of telling people how to dress. It's a joke,
Niquab - face veil
The niquab is not a requirement of the Quran. It is a cultural practice enforced by men to oppress their wives, concubines (yes Muslim men did and do have concubines) and women in general. As a moderate, secular Muslim, President Sarkozy is correct in taking a stance to hold on to Frances national heritage and cultural status. The problem with the extreme Muslims who have found residency in places like Europe, America, England in fact any domicile other than an Islamic state is that they wish to enforce their so called 'religious' practices on the host country. This is wrong and has led to terrorists being 'allowed' to have their movements hidden due to the 'community' closing ranks. It also makes it a problem for moderate, secular Muslims who have adapted and integrated in European states because they are branded as being the same. Banning the burka and face veil is not Islamaphobia since it is purely a cultural practice that has no basis in religion.
ban on full Islamic veils
As a person who spends a large amount of time in France and who has an appartement in Paris IdF I do think that a full public ban is going too far . It goes against the principle of tolerance of the West . France has a tradition of expressing it's idenitity , it's principles and values , via it's government and public services , including it's educational institutions . The ban should have been restricted to these .
As a Western person and as a man I do find the Islamic veil obscene and insulting . If a western woman visits say Saudi Arabia she is required to cover up - fair enough . But the vice versa should also occur .
Facial covering
People should respect the culture of the country where they are living. Félicitations Monsieur le président Sarkozy.
