Ex-army chief arrested after attack on president's home

Former army chief Nouhou Thiam has been arrested in connection with a Tuesday rocket attack on the home of Guinean President Alpha Conde (pictured) that killed one person and wounded two others but left Conde unharmed.

AFP - Guinea's former army chief Nouhou Thiam was arrested Tuesday after an attack on President Alpha Conde's home in Conakry which left one dead and two injured, his wife told AFP.

"They came to fetch my husband at 10 am (local and GMT) and he has been at the police station ever since," she said of her husband, who was fired by Conde shortly after he was elected seven months ago.

Thiam was replaced by General Kelesa Diallo who headed the army under the transitional government which led the country between January and November 2010 after a military junta which took power in 2008.

Conde was unharmed in the attack on his home, which was struck by a rocket as heavy weapons fire shook the capital in the early hours of the morning.

He later called for calm in a televised address to the nation.

An emergency meeting called by Prime Minister Mohamed Said Fofana was taking place Tuesday afternoon bringing together top members of government and the army.

A 21st century Seku Turay is back in Guinea. Staged coups, fake democracy, witch hunt investigation... Mr. Conde is looking for a way to divert attention. Some days ago Colonel Musa Keita disappeared reportedly in Govt hands. A show coup now. Believe me in the following hours and/or days to come more top soldiers & oposition leaders and activist will disappear. This is just a way to cover up your failures Mr. Conde. Change these gimmicks they will not help. You have been in France for about sixty years. Is this what the French taught you; how to further ruin your people? Don't forget the French are the worst enemies of Africa. Please professor think again. Millions of Guineans depend on your leadership. Please make it good.

Stop racism and let us unite

I call on all citizens of Guinea to be united in order to develop the country. Please stop racism even if the current president is not from your tribe. Only unity and cooperation could make us strong as well as move us forward.
