The Algerian paper Liberté has got hold of a poll showing only 57% of the French think the independence of Algeria was a good thing - proof for them that the French are still hanging on to a colonialist mentality.

L'Quotidien d'Oran says France is using its greater media power to write its own story of the war - including myths about how Algerians really felt - while El Watan argues it's time for Algeria to admit its national heroes committed atrocities as well.

In other news, the Guardian examines the competing bids to try Abdullah al-Senoussi; and the New York Times asks if Joachim Gauck can make Germany likeable again.

INTERNATIONAL PAPERS, Mon. 20/05/13: Tunisian papers are optimistic democracy will prevail given the recent Salafist violence. Algerian meanwhile say the conditions are similar to Algeria in the 1990s in the lead up to the civil war. Algerian papers are also reacting to the censoring of two dailies over an article that alleged President Abdelaziz Bouteflika had slipped into a coma. Also, China’s Prime Minister visits India while many Indians are skeptical about Beijing's intentions.
